There was none study done up to now about the selection of pistachio varieties despite of high potential of pistachio cultivars which was present in our country in very old times. The objective of this study was the selection of the best pistachio varieties which had the highest yield and thebest quality, suitable for inside and outside market requirements, and suitable for the modern plantation.
Materials and Methods
Selected 16 types and standardised Siirt, Ohadi, Uzun, Halebi, and Kirmizi varieties growth in our country were used as materials. First step in selection of pistachio varieties involved fruit size, cracked ratio, and inside fruit yield. Data was analysed by observations system.
Results
Selected types had much better productivity and quality than Siirt which had the best properties within the present varieties. Especially, selection 1, 5, 10 and 14 had higher fruit size, cracked ratio and yield (table 1). Two types within the standard varieties matured 30 – 40 days earlier. These types had short vegetation period, therefore they could be suggested to grow at high altitude during the short summer session. They also had dark green colour inside fruit which were considered to be suitable raw material for ice-cream, and desserts industry.
Comparison of selected types to Uzun and Kirmizi produced in a large scale among the standard varieties showed that selected two types and the other selected types got higher appearance quality than Uzun and Kirmizi.
