Aim
This research was conducted to determine suitable trimming methods among, local, spheare and umbrella shapes and plantation distance for the Gaziantep province.
Materials and Methods
This research was carried out in Sazgın fields that belongs to the Institute, under the dry agricultural practices. The materials were Halhalı, Eğriburun, Nizip, Yağlık, Kancebi and Kilis varieties that were grown for oil production. Experimental plots were conducted by using 5x8 m and 10x10 plantation range that was used as standard by local farmers. In the experiments, local trimming shape was used as control, and compared with those of the sphere and umbrella types. Five varieties, three applications and two-plantation range were examined and a total of 180 trees were used. Tree development and yield were investigated.
Results
In the case of yield, no statistical difference among trimming on trunk development was found, however, umbrella type trimming for two plantations range was effective, with 174 cm2 and 121 cm2 for Halhalı and Eğriburun, respectively. For Nizip olive variety grown for oil production, local trimming was effective at 5x8 m plantation range with 169 cm2, for 10x10 m plantation range, umbrella type trimming with 157cm2 was found to be suitable. For Kilis olive variety grown for oil production, umbrella type trimming was effective at 5x8 m plantation range with 161 cm2, and for 10x10 m plantation range, local type trimming with 200 cm2 resulted better yield. For Kancebi olive variety, sphere trimming gave high yield at both plantation ranges with 136 cm2. In the case of yield per tree, in 1986, at 5x8 plantation range, sphere type and umbrella type trimmings resulted 62 % and 68% more yield than the local trimming, respectively. In 1987, umbrella type trimming gave 31% more yield that the local trimming. In 1986, at 10x10 plantation range, sphere type trimming resulted 103% more yield that the local trimming, and in 1987 the ratio was 30%. Umbrella type trimming gave 193% and 75% more yield than the local trimming in 1986 and 1987, respectively. Among the trimming shapes, umbrella and sphere types resulted better yields.Plantation range of 5x8m gave 144% more yield per da compared to that of 10x10 m plantation range.
